Happy Birthday

I just got a cryptic voice mail from Sarah - something about owing it to my public to acknowledge the 25th anniversary of MTV.

So, there you have it. Happy Anniversary, MTV.

Thanks for Flock of Seagulls, the Buggles, Safety Dance, and Take On Me. Thanks for Duran Duran, and 120 Minutes, and Gilbert Godfrey, and that shortlived game show that my cousin Andrea was on (Remote Control?). Thanks for commodifying grunge and alternative at record speeds. Thanks for spawning the new reality television genre - Sorry all of the rip-offs couldn't be as engaging as that guy who put his hand in the peanut butter jar all those years ago, or as wicked smart as that hot Asian girl you stole from Northwestern's Tri-Delt house for your Seattle season.

Yours,
isaac

If you get VH1 Classic, you can watch the first 24 hours of MTV starting at 9pm tonight. (maybe midnight Eastern?)

VH1CL has a spectacular show on Sunday nights that is essentially 120 Minutes. Dave and I have often found ourselves glued to the set waiting to see what po-mo gem comes up next.

I'm pretty sure we had MTV from its beginnings, but I didn't care too much about it for a really really long time.

BUT, that first season of Real World kicked some major butt. Plus, I once was in the studio audience for Remote Control, which was as lame as it sounds. And has anyone seen the 1984 VMAs recently? That's some pretty astounding stuff.

wubba wubba.
