This Year in Music - Help!!!

Friends and Lurkers (You too, Wonder Twins!) -

Maybe it's the new job. Maybe it's the stepped-up family responsibilities. But, for the first time in twenty years, I have ZERO idea about recent releases. So tell me - What came out in 2007 that's worth listening to? If you've got a top ten list - or even a few faves, let me know, and help this music industry refugee retain some modicum of connectivity.

So far: The new Joe Henry and Wilco disappointed. The Shins are nice. Band of Horses was not for me. Still need to check out the National, Spoon, White Stripes, Iron & Wine, Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Modest Mouse, Rufus Wainright, Rilo Kiley, PJ Harvey, John Vanderslice... Ugh! Help me sort through this madness!

From Ro G:

10. The Clientele - God Save the Clientele: 3 songs are great; rest are too damn slow and/or sappy sounding
9. Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog: finally bought into this band
8. M.I.A. - Kala: first thought it proved she's nothing w/o Diplo, but soon came to really dig some of the new prods
7. Simian Mobile Disco - Attack Decay Sustain Release: very hooky
6. Darjeeling Limited - Soundtrack: some great Peter Sarstedt, Kinks, Satyajit Ray I was able to discover/re-discover
5. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga: the art of the 3 minute indie pop tune
4. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible: hard to believe this is only #4 - i guess that means it was a pretty solid year after all
3. Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals: one of the few newcomers on this list; hopefully they can keep it going
2. The Shins - Wincing the Night Away: came out in jan and played so much that not many are including it, but c'mon!
1. The National - Boxer: divine

I liked Matt Pond PA, Jose Gonzalez, Andrew Bird, The National, and Kevin Drew / B.S.S. (esp. "safety bricks"). Rather man-heavy, but what can you do. Hope the open house went well!

Happy 08, dude.

Sorry I can't help -- I'm totally clueless on this past year. I was just excited that the Travelling Wilburies were available on iTunes.
