This One's For You, Doug

I'm starting to get interested in Bill Richardson as a Presidential candidate.

  • He's got more experience than any other Democrat - His resume includes 14 years in Congress, Amassador to the United Nations, Energy Secretary, and now Governor of New Mexico. The last means he's got that vaunted "executive experience."

  • Beyond the titles, he's got a great record of both domestic and foreign policy.

  • He's extremely fiscally responsible, but also extremely socially progressive.

  • He's not afraid to say what he thinks.

  • He's been steadily increasing in the polls, and his name recognition is still only at 38%.

  • A few of my very conservative friends with longstanding ties to the Republican party have said they'd vote for him.

I am really intrigued by him as well. He recently took a trip to Darfur, and is willing to talk about it, unlike Obama who went to Africa- came back, and never even made mention of Darfur. He is just as outspoken on gay rights and other social issues. I mostly like what you say- the part of not being afraid to say what he thinks. It will be interesting to see if his name gets more out there for people. Right now the only people anyone seems to talk about on the dem side are HC and BO- of whick I am not so crazy about either. Obama fever died out in me pretty damn quick.

For me? You are too kind.

But you make a lot of good points. Bill Richardson has done everything on a smaller stage that a President is supposed to be able to do at the highest level -- executively, administratively, and diplomaticly. He's experienced and knowledgable in the particulars surrounding (at least) two major domestic issues -- borders and energy. He's performed the functions and possesses the credibility to be effective in international affairs. In an election such as this one, in which the consequences of poor choices or insufficient executive gravitas could be dire and world-wide, it is more critical than ever to choose a candidate with the appropriate, proven skill set (particularly if you share my conclusion that no current candidate is palatable ideologically). By this metric, Richardson is uniquely qualified in the current field to be the next President. I actually intend to register as a Democrat (for the first time in 16 years) for the express purpose of voting for him in the primary. And if the election were held today, I couldn't imagine choosing anyone else. Of course, I'm getting 600 days or so ahead of myself, and clearly a lot could happen, but right now I'm quite comfortable making that call.
