Hiking Advice?

Sarah and I are talking about leaving Asher with her parents over the July 4 four-day weekend, and going hiking somewhere. Can anyone recommend a stretch of the Appalachian Trail? More importantly, would anyone like to hazard a guess as to how many miles we should be able to hike in a day with fully-loaded packs? I think ten would be a safe bet, but I really have no idea.

i don't know of anything good south of New England and north of TN/NC, but if you can manage the distance, the White Mountains of NH are spectacular. lots of great possibilities around Franconia Notch and the Kancamagus Highway -- the Bonds (my favorite), Kinsman, etc. because of the way trails are made on the east coast (few switchbacks, straight up) 10 mi days are ambitious, especially if you're hoping to relax, too. a good guesstimate with full packs is 2 mi/hr with another hour for every 1000 ft up, and another half-hour for every 1000 ft down. you'll probably be faster than that, but it's a pretty safe way to estimate the length of your days.

hope it helps.

I second the White Mountains - Dan and I used to hike up there quite a bit. Be warned though, the trails are steep and rugged, different than West Coast hiking. Mt. Greylock in the Berkshires is much more mellow and pretty close to NYC, but not a huge area, more like big hills. So maybe less miles with full packs in the White Mountains, unless you are in great shape. But judging from your comment that the 11th St. playground was too far, not so sure...

I biked through the White Mountains five years ago. That would definitely be great, though might be a bit far away for this particular trip.

And come on, Amy! Walking to the 11th street playground is a totally different story than hiking. For the former, the goal is to get Asher to a quality playground asap.

Hey there,

Leo and I went camping at Mount Greylock last year--the hiking was nice but not too strenuous. Greylock also has some of the AT, so you guys could do that if you wanted. While we were there, we saw this place http://www.naturesclassroom.org/bascom.htm -- maybe a nice place to stay overnight if you want a break from tent camping. Have fun!!
